Alright day….let’s do this….

Simon Fairless

25 01 2012

I found the work of Simon Fairless on Zatista and was intrigued by some of his abstract landscapes and cityscapes. My favourite are the ones I have featured in the gallery below but please check out his website to see his other works.

I love the colours he’s chosen in the ones I’ve featured and the modernity of the cityscapes and paintings in general.

Artist Quote:

My paintings are a representation of feelings and special places that have caught my imagination and stirred strong emotions inside me. Often they’re about the feeling of how beautiful the landscape around us is or an emotional response to people and circumstance.

Langston Hughes Let America be America Again

24 01 2012

Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free.

(America never was America to me.)

Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed–
Let it be that great strong land of love
Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
That any man be crushed by one above.

(It never was America to me.)

O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
But opportunity is real, and life is free,
Equality is in the air we breathe. Read the rest of this entry »

Earth Without Art

20 01 2012

I saw this on pinterest the other day and though, wow, so true.

People take the arts for granted. They don’t realize how big a role the arts play in their lives.

The government is the first authority that likes to slash art funding. When I hear people support this movement I want to shake them. They don’t realize that art touches their lives everyday. They don’t realize that without art, a good portion of the things in their lives wouldn’t exist. I suppose that’s because we all have a different idea of what art is. If you appreciate art, you find the art in everything. If you don’t, you think of art being a painting on the wall and that’s it.

Sarah Ashley Longshore

18 01 2012

I have no idea where I stumbled upon the work of Sarah Ashley Longshore  but it must have been meant to be because I found her work shortly after seeing Breaking Dawn and apparently several of her paintings were featured in the film. I honestly didn’t remember seeing any paintings but I think I saw one with a red background and butterly when I rewatched the trailer (when Edward and Bella are on Esme Island and when Bella is looking at herself in the mirror with hands on her stomach).

Longshore is a New Orleans based artist who uses bright colours and features several pop culture icons along with other loveable figures in her works. I love the playfulness of her work!

Artist quote from her website:

My paintings are representative of the world I see around me. I am inspired by pop culture and things that I find intriguing. I really like to combine the use of words and images in an unexpected way to create a smart, colorful bold statement. Most importantly my love of color is what really makes my artwork “pop”.  My paintings are statement pieces that are a reflection of the experiences I have in my life.

Langston Hughes Too Blue

17 01 2012

I got those sad old weary blues.
I don’t know where to turn.
I don’t know where to go.
Nobody cares about you
When you sink so low.

(first stanza from poem)
